Answering Work Emails On the Weekends? Yes or No…

I was talking with a friend recently and she began to discuss with me how her boss emails her on the weekends and this isn’t a once in a while occurrence – this is every single weekend, nonstop. As she began to describe the feelings of “job commitment” that comes over her when she taps the respond button, I began to think about how I too was in her same shoes and would answer all sorts of emails from work “on my weekends” and “days off” YES! you can say I was quite the committed employee. As someone whom wanted to always make a good impression with my boss; I later realized that I had taken on a whole lot more than I could chew.

Model employee you could say, but was that really coming across to my boss because I answered multiple emails on the weekends? Uhhh—–NO! One email answered at 10pm one night, changed my life forever. It was a night in which I had nothing to do and just happened to browse my work email (in which I had coming to my phone) and seen that my boss had emailed me to ask a question, to their surprise – I answered them back. “I wasn’t expecting you to answer this time of night?” they explained and I said “Oh, it was no problem.” While they assured me that answering emails after hours or on weekends was not necessary, I continued to do it and they soon took it as “This girl is available at all times” and used it to their advantage, not only them but multiple people after them. I had set myself up as the availability gal in which you could email at any time and get a response.

Work Emails3
Answering work emails during your “personal time” can become complicated

While this was fun and liberating at first, it soon became a nightmare. Suddenly I was getting emails at the most awkward times of the night or day. They usually trickled in during the time in which I was spending with family, friends or having a mental health day. What had I started!!, my life was beginning to turn into a 365, 7day a week, 24 hours a day job. I suddenly realized that I had no time for myself as I soon began going in to work on weekends, Sundays included and stay extra hours after work and to answer emails on top of all that —– My job seemed like it was becoming a never ending story. Once you put yourself out there to be the “IT” person – everything changes, including your personal life.

I abruptly decided one day to just shut down the email on my phone altogether. I also stopped going in on weekends and while I do have my current job email coming to my phone now, I only check it or respond when I feel it’s an emergency that needs to be handled right away. If not, then it can wait till Monday. You see?, I felt that if I answered emails on the weekends that it would make me a more valuable employee but what it made me was a robot. I never received any awards, recognition or cool points with the boss because I answered an email after hours or on weekends and my pay definitely didn’t change. So who was I really doing this for and why had I subjected myself to this task? Because I wanted to show my boss they could count on me – no matter what.

And while that’s all good, it wasn’t good for my health; sanity or livelihood – so something had to change and change FAST!

Do you feel obligated to answer work emails after hours or weekends? Well, if you’re feeling the pressure – Don’t worry, just take the necessary steps below:

Just Say No

work email4
There’s no harm in saying NO!

Don’t get me wrong, we all work jobs in which we want to be relevant and deemed as a good employee but there has to be a line crossed somewhere. When we constantly say YES to everything our boss shoots our way, we put ourselves in position to not have feelings, a say or an opinion about anything. It’s okay to say NO sometimes. Especially if it’s going to interfere with your life outside of the workplace or office. They can’t fire you for saying NO.

Have a Conversation with the Boss

USA, New Jersey, Jersey City, Business man and woman arguing
Check with your Boss to see what their idea of after hours entails

You might want to see where your boss stands on how they want you to respond to emails during your off hours and is it a requirement. Personally, I used to have a boss that would send me emails after hours but only because if they didn’t do it right away, they would forget to and working at night was sort of their down time in which they used to respond to emails. So, get your bosses opinion on what they would like you to do concerning it. You may also want to let them know that your off hours and  weekends are very busy. Express the fact that if they do send an email, you may not respond until the next workday. This will let your boss know your stance on after hour emails and that they should not expect a response.

Expectations, Expectation, Expectations – Watch Out!

Word Expectations on ascending arrow above bar graph
The more you put yourself out, The more will be expected of you.

Ever noticed how when you do something for a person one time – they tend to take advantage of you doing it that one time and consistently come back to you again and again expecting you to do the same thing? That’s how we can become when we give of ourselves more than we should. It’s okay to be nice and kind but at the end of the day, you’re required to perform your job duties (that’s what you get paid for) anything in over excess to that can lead people to expect more from you than you’re willing to give. Only give what you can afford to give away because your time is precious.

Self-Care is the Best Care

self-care-b
Self Care will Save your Life

Whether it’s concerning work or anything else that may be pressing in your life. You must take care of yourself, including your sanity. I’ve been on jobs where I’ve over exhausted myself trying to prove or show how good of an employee I was and at the end of the day, I was the one with the swollen ankles, extreme headache and body aches. I was literally stressing myself out, while I made others feel comfy, cozy. Just as your boss needs their time, so do you. You’re no good to them, the business or organization if you’re spazzed out, stressed or in the hospital. Learn to turn off your email notifications from work or just don’t answer them at all. While that may be hard to do (because it was for me) you have to realize that you’re only one person and if something happens to you; will they come to your aide? No…(yes they’ll be concerned but the job must and always will go on, whether you’re there or not)

That’s sad to say, but in reality – we only get one life, one chance and one opportunity to make the best of it as much as possible and I can think of a million things for you to do besides answering that annoying email message from you know who. Life is short my friend and those after hour/weekend emails can wait…Life, unfortunately cannot.

Whose the SCAM NOW!!

2017 came in so fast and with the blink of an eye, it looks as if it’s leaving us as fast as it came in. Summer is officially over, Fall is on the way and the next thing you know we’ll all be singing “Jingle Bells” as Christmas will be here and Uh-Oh, another year has snuck upon us. But, let’s slow things down a bit, even if it’s in our minds. Speaking of Christmas, this is the time of year in which layaway’s get full; its also the time in which Wal-Mart (at least they used to), open up the layaway option for people to put items away and pay for them until 2 or 3 weeks before Christmas (could be a little earlier)….

With that being said and while the Holidays, Gifts and Saving are on people’s minds right now, so is getting a second job. You see, this is also the time of year in which stores like JCPenny’s, TJMaxx, Wal-Mart and/or the Mall start looking for and hiring temporary employee’s for the upcoming season; in some places this starts in October. There are a vast amount of people who look for second jobs in order to splurge big for Black Friday and/or have a little extra income to be able to get their kids or loved ones nice gifts.

While the hunt for a second job gets underway, whether to buy more presents before Christmas or to supplement an existing income; there are also people out there whom are looking to increase their pockets as well, they’re called SCAMMERS. You see, while you may have all the good intentions in the world regarding your financial situation, you have people out there whom offer “To good to be true” job offers that promises a big payday for little to no work on your part. These ads look something like this, (see below)

fake_cnbc_work_at_home_scam_01

If you’re not careful and I’ve fallen for it many times myself, you’ll fall prey to such ads. I see it all the time on Facebook and you might have too – with people showing pictures of wads of money, saying things such as “Wanna know how I make this in a Day?, just message me to find out how” and depending on your current situation, you’ll begin to get tempted by what they offer, I mean after all, who wants to work a second 9-5 punching in a clock only to make no more than what you bring home on your first job and let’s not even get into how much money Uncle Sam (The IRS) will take out of it, so it’ll feel as if you’re really not breaking bank and suddenly the excitement, goals and aspirations you had with getting a second job, begin to make you agitated. So, when you see ads like above or a social media post of someone flashing all this cash, in which according to their claims, was made in a day; Our eyes see instant opportunity, Our minds get filled with excitement and our heart becomes greedy, next thing you know our fingers have hit the button to contact this supposedly great opportunity.

I’ve been there and while that money does look good and I can think of many things in which I could do with it, I had to come to my senses and ask myself a couple of questions; “Who’s really making that much money in a day?” “How are they doing It?” and  “Is it Legal?”  and let me tell you, there’s always a catch to that madness because, if it sounds to good to be true – then it usually is. You better watch out because up under that hundred dollar bill could be a boat load of one’s and fives. People display things like that to get your attention; their overall intention is to never actually show you how to get that sort of money but to take you on a roller coaster ride of options in which you yourself may have to invest money into, to get some sort of course that promises to get you thousands or even millions of dollars. The talk is good, but in actuality you’ll become a mouse who’s following the cheese….but never gets to eat it.

Mouse_Trap

My suggestion to you would be to forget those “Get Rich Quick Schemes” and go after jobs that are legit. Yes, you may have to work a couple of hours but at least your check will be honest and the only thing you would be out of, is the time it took you to complete the application. I recently looked into getting a second job and found great success on Sitter City – this website is for people whom want to take on a nanny role; in which includes babysitting, pet sitting and elderly care. There are people on there all the time looking for people whom can help them out, for instance; you may have a couple whom want to have a date night and need someone to watch their kids for a couple of hours or you may have someone whom needs a sitter to care for their pet, either to walk them or look after them while their out of town and If you love elderly people (like I do) then you’ll even find people whom may need you to sit, read or help take care of their special loved one.

The only thing you’ll have to do is complete an online application for either one or all services; you’ll set your own hours and indicate how much you’ll charge. All of this is free of course unless you choose to attach a background check to your application (now that will cost you a little something) but it won’t break your pocket, however; it does give great comfort for whomever choosing you to see that you are the real deal. If Sitter City sounds like something you’ll be interested in, then maybe you should give it a try. I have to warn you, just because you complete an application doesn’t mean, people will respond right away and please use your best judgment and instincts when it comes to potential clients because everyone is not in their right mind and can use such sites to seek out innocent people so, use your head. If Sitter City is not you thing, then check out the link below in which was first aired on The Mom’s Everyday Show and discover how to avoid a scammer when looking for secondary employment.

Here are a Couple of Tips to help you spot out a SCAMMER!.png

  1. If the proposition is to good to be true?, It usually is.
  2. Always check the business out with the Better Business Bureau.
  3. Check to see if the building is a Brick and Mortar place and not out of someone’s garage or other place in which you have never heard of or seen.
  4. Applications for employment are always FREE!!!! Never send money to anyone to complete an application – that’s a RED FLAG!!
  5. Don’t send your resume to a fax machine or an undisclosed number, if possible you can look the number up on Google to verify where it’s from and sometimes who it is.
  6. If someone is flashing that they made 1000.00 in a day and want you to sign up?, Disregard it, because that’s a SCAM!!

As stated above you can view more of these tips and stories on The Mom’s Everyday Show – Check it out and get wise about your job hunt.

Happy Safe Job Hunting!!

Ain’t It The Truth Tuesday!!

Hey, You!!

I thought we would play a little game today. It’s a short week (for some people who were off on Monday) and while coming back to work or working through a holiday can be a bit of a drab; I wanted to get your week started off right with a little game.

We played this game at a friends birthday party recently and while I knew the game and had seen it on T.V. before. It was refreshing to get to know some pretty cool and interesting things about people you don’t know or either associate yourself with. The game is called:

two truths and a lie

If you don’t know how to play, let me explain quickly.

This will require you to think about yourself in a way that you wouldn’t normally think about, but you have to come up with three facts about yourself; except one will not be a fact, it’ll be the lie. Once you reveal your three things, then people have to guess out of the three, which one is FALSE.

So, to kick things off – I’ll start, you’ll have to guess which one is the lie. If you play, I’ll try to guess which one is the falsey for you. It’s a cool, fun game that will allow you to get to know me and I you.

Here are mine:

(Can you guess which one is not true for me?)

1. When I was in my early 20’s, I became a manager at McDonalds.

2. It was always a life long dream of mine to become a Nun.

3. I once tried out for a movie and got a part in it.

Please leave your answer in the comments and also leave your 2 truths and a lie and I’ll respond with which one I think is the Lie for you..

Are you Ready, Get Set! GOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

P.S. You don’t have to know people to guess – it’s more fun when you don’t know people, that’s what makes the game interesting.

Sunday’s Thought: You Betta Get Your Time Back!!!

If you don’t know Devon Franklin by name or the fact that he’s an award-winning Hollywood producer, best-selling author, preacher and motivational speaker – Oh and the fact that he’s produced several movie’s such as “Miracles From Heaven”, “Heaven is for Real,” and was named as Beliefnet‘s “Most Influential Christians under 40”

Well, if you’re still clueless – then you might have seen his face with this gorgeous young lady, mega actress Mrs.  Meagan Good – in which he married in 2012.

Together they both co-wrote the New York Times bestseller “The Wait.” in which chronicles their story of finding love, remaining celibate until marriage and offers inspiration for couples and/or singles going through the same thing. Their story was one of those whimsical fairy tales that you seem to only hear about in movies; although theirs was the real deal. Now, while I love this couple – this post isn’t about them in particular, but how my life literally changed overnight listening to Devon Franklin’s message of “Reclaiming My Time” in which he spoke about at The Potters house – ONECHURCH LA, where Pastor Toure’ Roberts and first lady/Evangelist Sarah Jakes-Roberts (daughter of mega pastor Bishop T.D. Jakes) are the pastor and co-pastor.

Don’t get me wrong I’m always talking about time and how we should maximize every moment given to us; but the message that I heard on last week from Devon, was like a big rush of wind that went in and out of my body. Because of that message, I am now getting up at 5:45am in exercise and prayer. Can I get a AMEN!!!

Reclaim-your-time-960x620_c

Of course, I’m not one that likes to keep good things to herself – so, I had to share this message with my audience and hope that once you hear it and get your burst of wind; that you in turn, turn around and share it with your friends, family, co-workers or anyone that you know whom could use a message such as this. I pray it blesses you to not only look at the time that you are wasting but to get UP!, BE PRO-ACTIVE! & DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!

We’ve all been the slave of giving too much of our time away to unnecessary people and relationships or spending too much time on senseless things; let this be your wake-up call to quit hitting SNOOZE! and do what God has equipped you to do, because……..TIME! IS PRECIOUS & TICKING!!

Enjoy this message – For more information on Devon Franklin, you can click on his name above to find out about and pre-order a copy of his forthcoming new book entitled The Hollywood Commandments” – A Spiritual Guide to Secular Success. You can also follow him on various social media outlets to check out what he’s doing next and trust me, you’ll want to become an avid follower when you do…
