Denying you….what does that means?
When the bible says, you must first deny yourself; pick up your cross and follow me – he was referring to the many things that we may have in our life that’s holding us “hostage” so to speak, for example you will have to give up some things in order to fully understand the will of God and where it is that he wants to take you, A lot of times we can’t accomplish this task due to the fact that we have so many other things that have taken Priority in our life. When Jesus asked the disciples to follow him, they immediately left what they were doing and followed him – none complained or worried of wives, children nor jobs – they trusted him enough to put down everything they had; picked up their crosses and followed. The rich young ruler (Luke 18: 18-23) on the other hand asked Jesus, “what must I do to inherit eternal life” – In short, Jesus told him to go and sell all his possessions and follow him, the bible says that the young rich ruler left saddened because he had too many possessions/riches and could not come to terms with giving any of it away…
The same willingness that the disciples had is also the same attitude that God wants from us today, he understands that we jobs, families and priorities and he’s not asking you to solely leave those things in limbo – he’s just asking to have first priority in you life – your world. When you decide to lay aside your plans and take up the cross to follow his plan for you….Then and only then will you know the true meaning of denying yourself…
Are you willing to pick up your cross or do you have too many possessions to leave behind…..
